People assume that meditation is pretty simple. You just sit there and try not to think about anything for longs periods at a time, right? Wrong! No one (including myself) considers the fact that you are meant to sit in an awkward position which you are not used to for horrific and painful amounts. This pain which you end up feeling is purely agonising. It’s not like anything I have ever felt before at all. It’s not like cutting your leg; it hurts initially but then after some ooh’s and ahh’s from any movement open wound, it’s fine. This was just pure torture which was being continued by your own mental force for this so called ‘enlightenment’.
Generally the rule of life is that if you are feeling pain, you do what you can to stop or avoid future pain. If you were to place your hand into a dark unknown draw and grab an object which cut through the depth of your palm, an instant reaction would be to release the object and remove your hand as quickly as possible to see to your injury. In meditation, you are to feel the sensation of pain, observe it, accept it, not react in any way possible or try to abort such senses and just move on to the following sensation. It was like trying to teach a monkey to fly.
After putting my body through all this physical misery, it better be worth it!
